About this map
This is a research product, not an operational terrain rating.
Terrain classes come from the automated autoATES v3.0 model, which was
calibrated on western Canada data and has not been validated here. It can be
wrong. Nothing on this map replaces avalanche training, the current
CAIC forecast,
and your own judgement.
ATES classes: 1 Simple, 2 Challenging, 3 Complex, 4 Extreme (5 m resolution).
Coverage grows as model runs finish — blank areas are unprocessed, not safe.
Terrain: USGS LiDAR resampled to 5 m. Forest: NLCD Tree Canopy Cover 2021.
Trails & closures: WY State Parks 2026, USFS, COTREX — closure polygons are
approximate; obey posted signs. Avalanche observations: CAIC 2025/26.
